Independent support, visible accountability
Industry can fund the work without buying the answer.
The chair and research leadership prepare the budget together. An accountable recipient controls disbursement. Sponsors may be acknowledged, but support never grants a governance seat, authorship, technical approval, endorsement, or publication control.
The nonprofit or fiscal sponsor receives the funds, retains discretion and oversight, approves the budget, contracts for eligible work, keeps records, and issues any required acknowledgment. The donor must confirm tax treatment with its advisers.
A company contracts with the accountable university, utility, nonprofit, or other legal entity responsible for the work. This is not presented as a charitable gift, and funds are not paid to a PI personally.
